At the start of each year, we resolve to better ourselves in some way or another. Most people consider health to be a top priority when it comes to their New Year’s Resolutions. We agree and think dental and eye care should be a part of that list.

DENTAL

We highly recommend integrating the following tips into your routine.

1— Remember to replace your toothbrush at least every 3 months. While you’re at it, go ahead and make sure it has the approved ADA seal of acceptance so you know you’ve got a legit toothbrush backed by the American Dental Association.

2— While the average person only brushes their teeth for 45 seconds (or less), it’s better to brush for the recommended 2 minutes to do an optimal job of removing bacteria and food remnants from your mouth and teeth. Please don’t brush too hard. You could be damaging your gums and causing potential infections.

3—We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again! Brush twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening before bed. Your teeth with thank you!

EYE CARE

1— It’s not just a fashion choice, it’s a protective measure for your eyes. Wear sunglasses in the presence of sunlight. Benefits include protecting your eyes from UV rays, preventing retinal damage, delaying the development of cataracts, and preventing wrinkles and skin cancer around the eyes.

2— Treat yourself to an eye exam. A baseline eye disease screening for those around the age of 40 can help assess any early signs of disease or changes in vision that could occur. Even if you’re over or under 40, it’s always a good idea to get a basic exam if you haven’t had one in awhile.

3— For the go-getters out there who work on a computer or with a screen for extended periods of time, do your best to prevent eye fatigue. Follow the 20-20-20 rule by looking away from your screen every 20 minutes at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. If eye fatigue continues, it could be a sign of various conditions, which might be a good time to revert back to tip #2.

Remember it takes 28 days to create a habit that can last a lifetime! Be in the habit of creating good habits, wink wink. Here’s to the success of your resolutions for 2021.
